1. training of health edification assistants (group A)

The first training of health edificication assistants and coordinators was held between 21- 26 June 2013 in Bratislava. The Office of the Plenipotentiary of SR for Roma Communities, on a basis of selection procedure, picked the first 34 assistants and 4 coordinators, who will work in the Roma settlements after completion of trainings. The health edification assistants attended special training according to to the educational programme Assistant of Health Edification in Roma Communities accredited by Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the SR led by lecturers of the ACEC team and external co-workers.


Participants in two groups completed the first of three training blocks through which they were acquainted with the work and mission of health edification assistants and coordinators in Roma communities and with the basic idea of the Healthy Communities project as well as with short-term and long-term visions of this programme. Participants acquired information and examples for practical field work of assistant, basic communication skills necessary for contact with community members, mayors, physicians, field social workers, staff of health facilities and cooperating institutions, basics of human biology, disease epidemiology and specialized social counseling in the medical field. They practised the acquired skills through interactive excersises and role playing in model situations. Part of the training was dedicated to the topic of assertive behavior and its practical application. From the practical point of view, the most interesting part of the training was first aid course led by employee of the Emergency Medical Service.

Health edification assistants and coordinators will operate in Roma settlements, that are part of the municipalities Huncovce, Jurské, Krížová Ves, Rakúsy, Výborná, Podhorany, Slovenská Ves, Stráne pod Tatrami, Veľká Lomnica, Hrabušice, Letanovce, Spišský Štiavnik, Hranovnica, Jánovce, Smižany, Vydrník, Richnava, Hermanovce, Kapušany , Kojatice, Svinia, Jarovnice, Chminianske Jakubovany, Nižný Tvarožec, Zborov, Varhaňovce, Trhovište, Vrbnica, Drahňov, Laškovce, Strážske, Veľké Kapušany, Vaľkovňa and Telgárt. Their activity will be coordinated by coordinators from municipalities Kapušany, Veľké Kapušany, Jurské and Svit.
 
By the end of 2013 the Office of the Plenipotentiary plans to increase the number of people in the field to 120. Another two training blocks will be implemented by the end of 2013.

Nationwide Programme is implemented by Platform for Support of the Health of Disadvantaged Groups and the Office of the Plenipotentiary of Slovak republic for Roma Communities.
